not be willing or able to, seemingly, take on big tasks. >> that happened all this week. kristin is live at the white house. a lot of talk. we're one day closer to that deadline. what can we expect to hear from the president in the next hour? >> hi there, richard. we expect the president to continue to push to get a big deal. what's a big deal? about $4 trillion in deaf sigz reductions over the next decade. at the end of last week, it looked like he and speaker boehner were moving towards the same page in terms of trying to get a big deal. that fell apart over the weekend. so we expect the president to resume calls for a big deal to say now is the time to seize the moment. there will be political pain on both sides. what he means by that is the democrats will have to come to the table over entitlements, making small changes to things like social security and medicare and the republicans will need to come to the table in terms of rolling back tax break for wealthy corporations and americans. as you said, richard, he's going to hammer this point that they will continue to work until they g

to ask the big oil companies to give up one dime not one dime of their $4 billion annual subsidy. they have refused to ask big corporations to give up one dime in their corporate loopholes. what we are negotiating with is a group of people who won't compromise. a group of people who have said we want the middle class to pay more taxes so that big corporations can pay less. we want seniors to lose their medicare so that big oil companies can continue to foost on their subdis. that's what the problem is. >> the case that republicans have taken a hard line on talks, at the same time democrats are taking what sounds like a hard line on entitlements. let me read a statement from leader pelosi that says we continue to oppose benefit cuts in social security and medicare. these pillars should not be used a as piggy bank to subsidize tax cuts for the wealthy. are democrats not just as guilty of failing to compromise as republicans are in this case? >> no, absolutely not. what we have said and i think most americans would agree with this is the middle class and seniors should not be asked

that he may lose from his base if he ever gets to the point where he's really going to cut the big three. i do give the president a great deal of credit for fighting the republicans like this and standing up to them. they're a reckless party and they don't care if they have another financial meltdown in this country. this is one of the most un-american things i think i have ever seen play out by a political party. president obama is putting politics aside. it's time for the republicans to do the same. i mean, when the president says this may sink my presidency, he's willing to have that happen as long as it saves the country financially. for once, for sure, we can turn to washington and see that there is someone and it happens to be president obama who's willing to put country first at the stake of -- at the sake of possibly losing his base in a very important election cycle and it may, of course, jeopardize his re-election. he's got 77 people in the house who signed on a resolution saying no cuts to the big three and willing to go to war with them as well to save the economy. where are

a democratic president at the table willing to make major changes in the big three, to the tune of $4 trillion across the board, and the republicans won't take the deal. it's rather amazing. why? are they afraid that president obama might do well with independent voters? are they miscalculating the fact that the base would be furious with the president if he were to cave in on the big three? and president obama tonight in my opinion is emerging as the most honest broker maybe washington has seen in a long, long time. he openly states he's willing to put his presidency on the line to bring both sides together to get a deal, and the only way he believes that can be done is if some revenue from the wealthiest americans comes into the treasury. and the republicans won't budge. it's amazing, it really is amazing. president obama is trying to make an honest negotiations at the decade. this is what republicans have wanted for decades. they have a democratic president that's willing to do it and they walk? because of revenue? amazing. for more on tonight's meeting, sam young man. white house correspon

out of room to cut. you will remember the big spending bill earlier this year cut tens of billions of dollars. so if you take a step back and you look at the entire forest there's a lot of spending cuts going on. lot of real spending cuts democrats are arguing that they are going to hurt a lot of people. so those certainly are accounting tricks. in terms of that last little margin to get to the point where they are cutting more than they are raising the debt ceiling which is what republican leaders wanted to do, they needed to rely on some creative use of cbo accounting methods. >> right. this is also interesting, though. even if he does get john boehner, that is, the house, even if he does get the conservatives to fall in lynn and go ahead and vote for this, there seems to be question about whether it will get out of the senate. have you 53 senators, two independents, included who said they are not going to support boehner's proposal. now we are looking at another proposal perhaps harry reid's proposal which the cbo also downgraded. let's take a look at the numbers. instead of $2.
